After almost seven months being house-ridden, so to speak, I escaped New York City, just like Snake Plissken in the 80’s movie. The “only” difference – I headed to Montreal, benefiting from being closely related to a Canadian. I was supposed to leave NYC at the end of March, for another country though, but coronavirus got in the way. So, for the past several months I was mostly twiddling my thumbs in anticipation of borders reopening – which has yet to happen – and riding my Brompton as a distraction. At some point I started to think of ways to overcome European border closures. That’s how Canada came into sight. Now I am on 14-day quarantine. Then…
A few weeks before the escape in numbers:
972 km – distance cycled
1981 – year Escape From New York was released
$25 million – collected at the box office, which was considered a success in 1981
CAN$750 000 – in fines for violating quarantine
