Yesterday, as I was heading toward Strasbourg at the end of the Channeling Tour, the idea of continuing my journey along the French waterways by bike started spinning in my head. La Voie Bleue, a cycling route I’d been eyeing for a while, begins just a short train ride from Strasbourg. It follows the Moselle and Saône rivers all the way to Lyon and seems to fit perfectly into my evolving travel plans.
Instead of buying a train ticket home, I got one to Luxembourg. While Metz was also an option as a starting point, I opted for Luxembourg in order to pass through Schengen, the village that lends its name to the Schengen Zone.
The route follows rivers and canals, and the “blue” in its name naturally evokes the color of water. Whether river water is ever actually blue is debatable—but I’m hoping there’s more river than canal this time, and that I won’t be left disappointed like I was last week.
